This unique low-energy house, situated on the outskirts of Megala Horafia/Aptera village in Western Crete, offers beautiful panoramic views to the White Mountains.
The Austrian owner, and artist and architect, has designed and supervised the building construction.
You reach the taverns from the village as well as the mini market 10 minutes by feet. The beach of Kalami is only 1,5 km and the long sandy beach, with crystal, clear water, of Kalyves approx. 4 km. The port of Souda is 3 km, international airport of Hania about 25 minutes by car and the Venetian Old Town of Chania 13 km.
The interior is designed with a village in-mind; an atrium is the central point, from which all the rooms of the house radiate. The three components, dining, seating area and bedrooms are slightly offset from the center; ‘paths’ and ‘lanes’, inside all lead outside.
On entering there is a large front lobby with a storage room. One then enters the main house into the dining room, which leads off to a part covered courtyard. Off the dining room to the right is the fully fitted kitchen with a breakfast bar. A wood burning stove is situated at the base of the atrium providing additional heating for both the dining room and the lounge. Walking up a few steps one enters the lounge, from which there are two terraces. A small one just for admiring the view and the main terrace with two distinct sitting areas and giving 180 ° panoramic views to the majestic the mountain range of the “Lefka Ori” and to the different area villages.
From the atrium one descends to the bedrooms, on the lower level, a door leads one to the lower terraced garden, with its own ‘paths’ to different section. The main bedroom has a large bathroom with a walk in shower and the second double bedroom has a smaller bathroom with a shower cabin.
There is a study/studio with a mezzanine bedroom, bathroom with a separate entrance so can be used as a guesthouse.
This eco house is built with a timber frame and traditional clay brick walls. In order to obtain the Mediterranean character, the exterior walls have a plastered outer skin, on cement-bonded fiber lightweight boards.
There are double glazed windows with mosquito blinds throughout and solar panels provide hot water and under floor heating. There is more 186 m2 building allowance.
